CONCERTINO
La Monnaie, Fiocco Hall,
17th May 2013, 12.30

Ensemble “Per Questa Bella Mano” on period instruments

“AROUND MOZART”

1/ J.M. Sperger : Duetto for Viola d'Amore and Viennese Violone

2/ Leopold Mozart : Frosch-Parthia

3/ F.A. Hoffmeister : Solo-Quartett nr. 1

4/ W.A. Mozart : Concert Air KV 612
   "Per Questa Bella Mano"

The Instruments / The music

In this very special concert you will hear instruments that look familiar, but which differ from their modern counterparts.

The string instruments are set up with gut strings, with the exception of the Viola d’Amore. Indeed, this instrument of Arab origin adopted steel strings from very early on, and they give it its silvery, resonant sound. Despite its many strings the Viola d’Amore is not a loud instrument, but according to Leopold Mozart it was the “sweetest sounding” of all string instruments. The Amore you will hear in the hands of Haruko Tanabe has 7 playing strings and 6 resonance strings.

The Viennese Bass is an instrument type that dates from the Classical Period. It is tuned in a combination of thirds and fourths (D-A-D-F#-A) as opposed to the modern bass which is in fourths throughout. The “Viennese Violone” with its somewhat rough, reedy and resonant sound was capable of great virtuosity, and even Mozart composed a Concert Air for bass voice and Viennese Bass. His “Per Questa Bella Mano”, written shortly before the composer’s death, is quite a challenge on the modern bass. The Viennese Violone gives one a better chance to enjoy the real qualities of this splendid work.

Mozart wasn’t the first composer to couple the voice with the Viennese bass. Johann Matthias Sperger, whose Duetto for Viola and Bass you will hear (albeit played on a Viola d’Amore instead of the Viola) wrote two similar concert airs, more than ten years before Mozart. Sperger was probably the first real bass virtuoso in history.

From Sperger to Hoffmeister is but one step. Whereas we have no idea whether Sperger and Mozart ever met, Hoffmeister knew both men very well. He played the violon in a string quartet  with Mozart (Viola), Dittersdorf (Violin) and Vanhal (cello), and for Sperger he wrote 4 Solo-quartets and a number of concerti. You will be hearing the first of these Solo-quartets, a work in which Hoffmeister is still trying to familiarize himself with this enormous instrument. The piece consists of 3 movements, the last of which is a Polonaise ("Polonese") in Rondeau-form. For final movements the Rondeau was all the fashion back then, as was Eastern European folk music.

It comes as no surprise then, that we find another Polonaise (written "Polonoise”) as the last movement of  Leopold Mozart’s “Frosch-Parthia” (Frog-Parthia). This charming composition was found in an Austrian monastery where the Mozart family stayed from time to time on their many trips to and from Vienna. The piece may have been written and played there, by Leopold on violin, the abbott (who was apparently very musical) on the 'cello and a monk on the bass (most Austrian monasteries back then had a bass player).
The frog imitations are quite discreet : one finds them in some dissonances and very low notes, but Leopold had enough taste not to turn this piece into a circus number by having frog sounds all over the place. All in all, an unpretentious and amusing  piece, fun to hear as well as to play.
Here, Korneel will be using a 5-string D-Violone, the “contrabass” version of the Viola da Gamba. Tuning is D-G-C-E-A.

The Concert Aria by Leopold’s son Wolfgang was for a long time considered a  kind of mystery : unplayable, and unworthy of the great composer. It was only when the original instrument was rediscovered, and its special way of notation (two octaves higher than the actual pitch),  that people realized this was one of Mozart’s most beautiful airs.
Yoshiaki Kimura, rising star among the younger generation of Japanese singers, Kimiko Nishi on pianoforte and Korneel le Compte on Viennese Violone invite you to discover this marvellous "love song" : “For this lovely hand…”

This concert will be recorded and filmed for the documentary “From Brussels With Love”, that will be premiered at the International Bass Convention in Rochester, N.Y. on June 6th.

Ensemble Per Questa Bella Mano

Leopold Mozart

RONDOM MOZART

The Viennese Classical Period is a real goldmine for musicians and music lovers. The years roughly between 1750 and 1830 present us with big political, social and artistic changes. Coming from the Baroque age, lots of baroque ideas and influences can still be found for a long time, but the tendency is for music to become less complicated in its construction. The old rules of counterpoint and harmony are mostly abandoned in favour of a more melodic approach. New musical forms are developed, such as the symphony or the string quartet, but old forms continue to exist and are adapted to the new taste (such as the instrumental concerto).
Squeezed between the Baroque and Romantic periods, art music gradually evolves toward a more individualistic expression in the later years. Many composers of the Classical time incorporate both baroque  and pre-romantic elements into their works.
What we call the "Viennese" Classical Period goes far beyond Vienna itself. The term "Viennese" is a bit misleading because many of the great composers of that time worked far away from this cultural centre. Some scholars have suggested using the term "Austrian" rather than Viennese, but many composers came from other regions as well.
Tonight we present you with exquisite chamber music works by Classical composers from around Vienna and Bohemia. We feel pretty sure that for most of the pieces this will be the first time you have the chance hear them, and we really hope you will enjoy discovering this delicious music.
The instruments we are playing are either original old instruments or copies of such. For some works we have managed to find the manuscripts. (Manuscripts are magical  because they are the closest we can get to a composer's ideas, but also because playing from a manuscript is like a form of time travel : to realise you are looking at the exact same image that the composer wrote and that the musicians played from, over two hundred years ago, is something very, very special).
Our goal is to try and be faithful to the composers' works, but at the same time to create an atmosphere of sharing a beautiful experience with our audience. For us, a concert is a two-way street. There is no concert without musicians. But there is no concert without the audience either. We hope we can share a happy evening together.
